Through Flare out and Gas monetization, We push the limits of environmental responsibility

Located in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 102 in the Nigerian offshore, the Ofon phase 2 Project is an important development of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC, 60%) and TotalEnergies (40%). In line with TotalEnergies’ environmental stewardship commitments, this project is a major step forward in the Total Group’s plan to reduce flaring of associated gas and greenhouse – gas emissions. In full compliance with Nigerian law and TotalEnergies’ strict environmental policies, Ofon phase 2 project has succeeded in one of its major objectives to stop routine gas flaring from the Ofon field. This flare out on Ofon represents a 10% reduction in overall E&P flaring by the Group. By achieving flare out through gas conversion to other uses and helping to develop capacities, projects such as this empower TotalEnergies to further demonstrate its true commitment to the environment and to a better energy.

Zero Gas Flare Translates to Cleaner Environment and Better Energy

In December 2014, TotalEnergies recorded another landmark in Nigeria through the Ofon phase 2 project which started production on its new production platform and achieved gas flare-out on this offshore field. The project is designed to monetize the gas by piping 106 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the NLNG plant at Bonny Island and develop additional reserves estimated to exceed 350 million barrels of oil equivalent, thereby adding a new vista to Nigeria’s aspirations on increased production, gas monetization and zero gas flaring. Producing oil without gas flare will lead to a positive impact on the environment.

Transforming lives through capacity development

Capacity development was a key factor to the successful conclusion of the Ofon phase 2 project, which has helped local contractors to build their capacities and obtain the income required to invest in future projects. This is more than just a win-win situation, it is a real interdependence which yielded exceptional results: the Ofon living quarters platform (OFQ) is the first of its kind to be built in Nigeria. This is one sure way of securing a better future for Nigerians.
